Matança / Slaughter

A tradição da matança do porco é ainda um importante meio de subsistência para uma parte da população açoriana. Originalmente, o ritual da "Matança" durava vários dias e envolvia toda uma comunidade. Hoje em dia, faz-se apenas durante o fim de semana e é essencialmente um evento familiar. O filme "Matança", enquanto nos mostra como se mata e desmancha o animal, também nos indica que o futuro da tradição depende da sua constante adaptação ao presente: os alguidares de barro deram lugar aos de plástico e, em vez de se cantar ao desafio, ouve-se música pop na rádio. A velhota, sentada no sofá a ver televisão, garante-nos que já se pode dar uma Matança à sua neta, que ela faz tudo.

The "Matança" is the traditional practice of killing and dismantling a pig. It still constitutes an important means of subsistence for part of the Azorean population. The "Matança" ritual used to take several days, involving the whole community. Nowadays, the "Matança" lasts only the weekend and is mostly a family event. The film "Matança", while depicting the killing and dismantling of the animal, also shows us how tradition must constantly negotiate with contemporary habits in order to hold it's place in the future. Clay pots gave place to plastic ones and instead of people singing folk songs, we listen to the radio station delivering pop music. The old lady sitting on the couch watching TV, assures us that her granddaughter can preform a "Matança" with great skill.
